If You Haven’t Seen Awkward Black Girl, Go Play in Traffic

So this past Saturday night while I was layin’ on my couch doing as little as possible in the wee hours of the night, I discovered a web series called The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. I’d heard of it before and saw people typing all sorts of sounds for laughter and attaching ABG to it, but I was always too lazy to check it out or too busy walking into traffic. But on Saturday night, I saw ABG in my Twitter timeline and decided it was time to see what the hoopla was about.

Typing that sh*t in on Youtube was 1 of the best decisions I’ve made in 2011. I watched all 7 of the videos — ranging from 3.5 to just under 12 minutes — and cracked the f*ck up through each and every 1 of ‘em. It doesn’t take Captain Obvious emailin’ me to know that Issa Rae, the creator, is well on her way to stardom. For those that have seen the web series, you know what it’s about. For those that haven’t, it’s basically a short comedy that creatively tackles many of the every day occurrences that we talk or think about. In the case of this show, it happens to be from the perspective of a black woman…yet somehow relatable to dudes too. The writing is genius. Pure genius I say! Pure genius!

I’ve been trying to figure out how to describe the show and all that keeps coming to mind for me is something like Curb Your Enthusiasm spliced with Everybody Hates Chris(tina) spliced some other shows where you hear the main character’s thoughts while the scene plays out. I had like 4 shows in mind before I wrote this post. But as soon as I started scribing the ferociousness, the bubbles of thought flew out my window and into the clouds.

Anyways, check out the web series if you haven’t. I linked to the show site earlier in the post and you’ll find the 1st webisode below. This sh*t makes me wanna go off, get a camera, film something mediocre, then go back to my day job after realizing I’ll never be this funny. Point blank…the show is dope. I’ll be curious to see how it plays out if it gets picked up and goes from short videos to half hour episodes.

  1. Mannnnnn!! When I watched the 6th one, I was TIGHT that the 7th wasn’t out already. Then I saw your tweet and I was like “What ROCK was I under that I almost let this fly way over my head??” The entire web series had me literally crying. Not the fake tears you see on twitter. But like I’ve twitpic’d my tears. The most recent (7th) webisode was the most awkward of them all. I don’t want to see this end.. at all. I love it! Glad you do too lol wait, did you use the word “love” too? Or did I just imagine you did? Ah *shrug* Oh well!

This show is my SH*T. Best web series right now hands down. Yeah, I would most def describe it in the same vein as Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm. . .sort of about nothing yet hilarious. I was too happy to skip over to KickStarter. Proud to support writers/artists/creative talent like ABG and Slim. Every lit bit helps

Oh my god…I’m so glad you posted about ABG–I absolutely ADORE this show. I first found out about it from another blog I follow and have been hooked every since! J’s life is my life, so I can totally relate, lol. After just 7 episodes, I all ready have my favorite characters from Patty–who was fired, but still shows up to work with her snotty nose to Baby-voice Darius who even whispers on a mic. I can’t get enough. Like you said, it is like other off-beat shows CYE, Community, The Office and Parks and Rec–but with an urban twist. all the random references to movies like Love and Basketball to TV shows like the Fresh Prince, make it even more hilarious. I mean, how awkward and down right laughable, but totally spot on was the most recent episode’s depiction of some spoken word? I was dang-near in the floor. Yes, I’m a total ABG geek and groupie, lol.

That spoken word had me doubled over holding my abs. The black dude with the white chick that side-eyed the J with the white dude killed me too. Such great social commentary.lol

      • WinterSundays says:

“Rap and poetry had a baby named spoken word. I wish I could abort that baby.”
        BRA HA HA HA HA

lol, word. I was smh and laughing, cuz it’s so damn true.

LOL! Yo… thanks for putting me on to ABG! I was just watching this ep in my office only to have to rush to turn down the volume. Couldn’t stop watching, though! Love it!

Let me say, I laughed SO HARD when I saw this series! I watched 6 episodes in one day, then the 7th a few days later. I was laughing the very first episode at her singing “Booty Shawts.” This is probably one of the funniest things ever. I’ve also watched her other show “The F Word” with the Fly Guys and they are HILARIOUS to me! I can’t wait for each show to start back!

Lmao I was avoiding watching these when everyone kept talking about them. But she’s actually really hilarious! Thanks for posting this.

I love this series from the start! It’s a show I think nearly anyone can relate to. If anything it’ll keep you laughing

  9. I finally got to watch it! I had heard of it before but never sought it out. It is such a great show I would love to see that on a major network. Issa is so clever and I swear these people actually exist out there some where!! I watched all episodes in one sitting. OMG Heelarious!

If I had the money I would produce that whole series. All this crap tv these networks are putting out. Not all of the networks, but you all know who I am talking about! They will get no mention on here. o___O to them.

I hope she gets the funding to continue.

I LOVE this show! My best friend put me on to it about a month ago and I’ve been telling everyone I know about it ever since. The show is border line scary for me because it mirrors me and my life so closely. Heck, I even had a coworker think that it was me doing the voiceovers because J and I kind of sound alike. My friends all say, “Yo, that’s YOU!”
I’ve donated to the kickstarter campaign and even offered to help them find additional sources of funding in any way that I can. I’m so down for this series and will do whatever I can to help it succeed. It’s great to see this depiction of diverse young adult characters.
