Duane Reade recently transitioned from the Flex Rewards program to Balance Rewards; a perk program of the parent company, Walgreens. The store reps had been beating me over the head to switch from old card for a couple weeks, so I finally went to the location near my job to switch it out and get it popping. The advertisements for the new program were everywhere. I barely got in the door before I was on my third reminder.
I’m not an extreme couponer or anything, but I picked up the Duane Reade store circular to see what was available. This is probably something I’d should do more often. Seems like it’d save me some money.
Anyway, first thing I saw was the Monster energy drinks on sale. I’d chilled out on caffeine for a while, but lately my tank has been running near E. So I said why not? I also wasn’t feeling well, so I had to head over to the pharmacy area to pick up some Vicks, which also happened to be on sale. These were the only things I copped on this adventure. Made it to the register, said goodbye to my old card and hello to the new one. It was pretty easy. Really easy. I just gave them the old one, they scanned it and transferred over info, then handed me my new one. No paperwork or anything.
..
A few days later, I went back in on the way home from work to take a look at the circular and see if anything else was on sale that I’d want. The first thing I saw this time was Simply Orange — the love of my life and the citrus of my heart. Who doesn’t like Simply Orange? Why is their orange juice so tasty? Do they grow the oranges in soil laced with crack? These are the questions that I ask myself. Don’t you dare judge me.
And keeping with the caffeine theme, I noticed Red Bull was on sale. Picked up a pack, headed to the register, stood in line and awaited my savings. It’d turn out to be $4. Not bad.
For those in NY, consider dropping by your local Duane Reade and enrolling in the new Balance Rewards program. There are a lot of great opportunities to rack up points and discounts. If you don’t have time to go into the store and deal with the circular because you’re an impatient shopper like me, you can find it online. Saving a few dollars never hurt anybody. And if it did, that must’ve been some really sharp cash.

I really like the new rewards especially since its combined with Walgreens so you will reach rewards faster. I also like that they give you opportunities to earn tons of points. I will say though that CVS tends to have a better system and I have saved $450 since the beginning of the year working their system. I will be doing a post on how exctly I did that..
